Lindberg-on-Sea Art Gallery är stolt att under november månad presentera utställningen Storm-on-Sea: A Michael Sole solo Exhibition.

I denna utställning presenteras ett urval av Michael Soles (f. England 1985) mest dramatiska stormscener, tagna från platser och ur ögonblick som utgör Soles inspiration och passion och som representerar konstnärens uppfattning att, i målarkonsten, måste energi mötas av energi. Mäktiga naturliga krafter bör återskapas genom en energisk och självsäker måleriteknik.

I Cornwall Rocks no.2 har Sole, genom att använda kvastar för att imitera rullande vågor och genom att luta duken medan färgen fortfarande torkar för att återskapa en tillbakagående våg, skapat ett motiv fullt av rörelse och skiftningar, både i färg och atmosfär;

“I wanted to capture the subtle changes of the colour on the coast of Cornwall in this painting and the blur of the line between where the sky meets the sea. The horizon. With most of my work I struggle to be spontaneous and to use as few a gesture as I can get away with. The broom was a move of frustration, one which worked, this time, in my favour.”

“The colours of the seaweeds and shells on the Cornish rocks, and the fact that the colours of the sea are relatively muted, allowed me to exaggerate the colours I used in the rocks.”

I March Gale serien avbildas en vårstorm som härjade under mars månad på södra Frankrikes kust. Målningarna har en mer abstrakt framtoning med syfte att återskapa en känsla för platsen snarare än en verklig avbild.
För denna serie av målningar förlitade sig Sole på sin artistiska genre ’Involuntaryism’ konstnären ’tillåter’ materialens egenskaper att själva skapa målningarna, delvis genom tyngdlagen, delvis genom de motsättningar som uppstår när oljefärgen och akrylfärgen möts på duken. Sole bygger i denna teknik upp målningarna genom lager på lager av färg för att efterlikna himlens och havets olika lager och samtidigt ge motiven djup. Även här har Sole använt sig av kvastar för att återskapa vindens rörelse över vattenytan;

“These paintings are a series of works focusing on skies, the depth and the layering effects in our atmosphere, but also looking at the abstract nature the sea has. This year I feel myself naturally moving toward abstraction, wanting to produce work which is moving away from the image, so that the materials and the processes take on much more of an important role enabling me to become freer with the paint, not trying to replicate a particular image but to just grasp an idea of that place, and how I felt and remembered it.”

“I am very happy with the gradient of colours in this piece and its spontaneity. The white in these pieces is applied by spraying the paint over the wet oil and also sweeping the brush across to show the movement of the wind on the water.”

I Storm on the Riviera no.8, som ingår I Soles mest abstrakta serie föreställande hav, har konstnären funnit inspiration i de färger och kontraster av ljus som uppstår mellan en mörk, stormig himmel och ett solbelyst hav;

“With these paintings I am very excited as I can be as crazy as I like on the sea, using my normal techniques, because as soon as that dark purple of the sky is added our minds instantly detect the foreground as the sea. This series is my most abstract representations of the sea. Relying on the colours to tell the story and subject.”

Michael Sole har en BA i Fine Arts från Wimbledon College i London. Sole har deltagit i utställningar och mässor runt om i England, i Frankrike, USA, Hong Kong och Singapore, däribland separatutställningar på The Mall Galleries, London (2017), Yeelen Gallery i Miami, USA (2014), och Les Vieux Murs i Antibes, Frankrike (2010).Sole håller även vinnande samt finalisttitlar från flertalet prestigefyllda utmärkelser såsom the Global Art Awards, National Open Art Award, Cill Railag residency award och Dorset Landscape Painter of the Year (2017), Sherfield Open Exhibitions (2016), ‘The Arts Club Charitable Trust Award’ från the Royal Society of Marine Artists’ (2013) och ‘Young Artist of the Year’ från the Royal Society of Marine Artists (2010 och 2009).
